Bhishma is often seen as a noble and self-sacrificing figure in the Mahabharata. Yet, his actions towards women are troubling. He wronged seven women in his life. Let me explain.
First, there’s Amba (1). She wanted to marry another but was abducted by Bhishma for his brother. Her life was ruined, leading her to seek revenge. She was reborn as Shikhandi and played a key role in Bhishma’s death. Amba’s story is well known.
Then, there’s Ambika (2) and Ambalika (3). They were married to Vichitravirya. Bhishma never considered their needs or desires. When Vichitravirya died, they were forced to conceive children with Vyasa, a sage, to continue the Kuru lineage. Their consent and wishes were never considered. From the beginning, they were abducted by Bhishma against their wishes during their swayamvar. Who knows what kind of life they could have had if not married to Vichitravirya and some other King?
Gandhari’s (4) story is also sad. Bhishma won her over with gifts and gold for the blind king Dhritarashtra. She was not informed of her husband’s blindness until after marriage. This deception by Bhishma altered her life forever.
Kunti (5) and Madri (6) were married to Pandu, who was not in good health. Both women had to endure great hardships. Kunti faced many struggles, raising her sons in difficult circumstances. Bhishma arranged these marriages too, leading to their suffering.
Lastly and Finally, there’s Draupadi (7). During her humiliation in the Kuru court, Bhishma, the eldest and most respected figure, remained silent. His inaction allowed her dignity to be trampled.
While Bhishma is often celebrated for his virtues, his treatment of these women shows a different side. His actions and inactions brought suffering to many. This complex legacy reminds us that even the noblest people can have flaws.
P.S. I have written everything in short. Take some time to reflect. In case, if you are going to comment in favor of Bhishma.
